My Wildflower Meadow Failed

I am feeling so defeated today.

I failed at a wildflower meadow. Not only did I fail, I failed for years. I've been trying to get the meadow to be a meadow for 3 seasons and today I called it. It doesn't work. Time to move on.

These images are what I had hoped to create. An area for bees, bugs and pollinators. An untamed area. A place I could sit and watch the cosmos and cornflowers dance in the breeze, pick them and pop them in a vase to brighten up inside.

Let's have a look at my journey.

Before pictures: 3 summers ago I laid a covering of black plastic down for a whole summer to smother the weeds and cook the seeds already in the soil. I then hand- tilled the whole area (approx 5m by 10m). I added seeds and seeds and seeds and more seeds. I seeded in spring, in summer in autumn and in winter and in spring again.

And what I got was grass.

This photo from spring 2024 shows that I had kept much of the grass at bay. but broad leaf weeds were the predominate species, many an hour was spend weeding these guys out.

Late winter/early spring pf 2025 and the whole area looked really lush and lovely. I had concerns about the grass out-competing the flowers, but I could see cornflowers, pansy and alyssum fighting through, so I lived in hope.

By mid-spring, the grass had gone crazy (Bunnings bucket for scale) so I went through with shears and manually cut back all of the grass to about 6 inches, being careful to avoid the iris, achillea, salvia and any other tough guys that had held their ground.

At this point there is still signs of life, still hope.

This morning I assessed the would-be meadow. Our winter and spring rains have almost stopped and the soil is already drying out. I can't afford to irrigate the meadow and survivors are already looking sad. I don't think it's unattractive at all, I think it's natural and wild and woolly, but it's not going to get any better as the dry summer kicks in.

And so the decision was made. I have tried and tried again, but it's time for a new plan.

A boring old mowed lawn until I can come up with a new plan.

I love gardening because you CAN make mistakes but this one, it really hurt. I really thought if I stuck with it, I would eventually succeed. And, maybe I will with a new design?

I'd like a hedge in to cover the fence and hopefully block some wind.

Then I need a drought-hardy, frost-hardy garden that will thrive with no irrigation while being blasted with western afternoon sun and south-westerly winds blowing in from Antarctica. Should be a piece of cake. Oh and all on a budget of like 50c.

I shall keep thinking and hopefully I'll have a plan by next autumn when I can get planting again.

I feel better after getting that out. If you have failed OR succeeded at a wildflower meadow, I'd love to hear about. Also if you have any tips for my next garden plan, please let me know.

  1. Oh Berz!!! I’m so sorry it didn’t work out. I blame the TAS weather, not your green thumb! Your garden is one of the best I have seen!! Big hugs!
